    The Many Faces of Petroleum

    Petroleum is extracted from the world’s oil fields each day, with global oil production having reached record levels in 2023 at a rate of 96 million barrels a day. Petroleum is a substance consisting primarily of hydrocarbons, as well as minuscule amounts of countless other compounds such as sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, and metals. Once it has been extracted from beneath the earth's surface and processed to remove gas and water components it is then referred to as crude oil. Crude oil in and of itself cannot be used for any purposes other than combustion, but when refined is transformed into a versatile product which has a wide range of different uses such as a power source, heat source, or as raw material for a variety of applications. 

    The Dangers of Petroleum Processing and Petrochemical Plants

    Extensive quantities of petroleum products are both produced and consumed in petroleum processing and petrochemical plants throughout the world. Great care, however, must be taken to ensure worker safety when working with petroleum products. Today we would like to take a look at some of the specific dangers of working with petroleum.

    ・Flammability

    Petroleum is primarily composed of hydrocarbons, which are flammable and can ignite and burn when close to a source of fire. Even a small spark such as from static electricity can be enough to cause it to ignite, so  precautions must be taken to prevent static electricity and sources of fire must be handled with utmost care in petroleum plants. Any products used within the plants also require explosion-proof structure, and because in some plants petroleum is heated or dried at high temperatures, it is vital to establish and follow thorough safety measures appropriate for such processes.

    ・Toxicity

    Petroleum consists primarily of hydrocarbons. When burned, hydrocarbons may release highly toxic carbon monoxide if there is not enough oxygen present, in a process known as incomplete combustion. The minuscule amounts of sulfur found in crude oil can also react to form hazardous sulfur compounds. Not only can sulfur compounds release toxic gases or lead to catalyst poisoning, one product of the combustion of sulfur compounds, sulfur dioxide (SO2), contributes to air pollution as well. Desulfurization of petroleum therefore constitutes an important responsibility for the petroleum refining industry. 

    Fire & Gas Devices

    Regardless of the refining processes being carried out, petroleum processing and petrochemical plants possess a complex, large-scale system connecting different kinds of equipment including petroleum tanks, distribution pipes, boilers, and heat exchangers. When petroleum refining companies decide to build a new plant, they will almost invariably subcontract engineering, procurement and construction for the project out to an EPC contractor.     • Sounder: Sounds an alarm to alert workers of the presence of gas or fire, allowing for prompt evacuation and early response.

    Our SD-3 Series fixed gas detectors were developed with the demands of the oil and gas industry in mind. These products were designed to meet the high functionality and versatility demands of today’s increasingly large and technologically petrochemical and other plants in the industry. These fixed explosion-proof gas detectors allow for continuous monitoring of oxygen levels as well as detection of toxic gas leaks and combustible gases in the surrounding atmosphere. These global products are certified explosion-proof by various international standards and meet the requirements of other international standards (including proposed standards) such as IEC/EN performance and SIL 2. They support the traditional 4 – 20 mA analog signal as well as the HART communication protocol, enabling digital signal transmission as well.  

    ・FLS Series Fixed Flame Detectors (Manufactured by Fire & Gas Detection Technologies Inc.)

    FLS Series products are equipped with triple IR (IR3) detection technology for use in the prevention of the many kinds of hydrocarbon fires that can occur in the oil and gas industry. Reacting to the presence of flame or explosion in less than just 40 milliseconds, these fixed flame detectors are capable of detecting a 1 sq ft. (0.1㎡) fire from 15 meters away within 1.3 seconds. In addition to instant detection of many different kinds of fires, these products are capable of accurately recognizing the scale and properties of a fire, preventing false positives. Like the SD-3 Series, they support both 4 – 20 mA analog signal transmission as well as digital signals such as HART® and Modbus RTU RS485. These products have also obtained many international safety standard certifications such as ATEX, IECEx, cFMus, INMETRO, and CE.
