Oxygen levels in the work environment can be depleted when certain substances are burned, in the presence of substances which absorb oxygen, or when gases build up in the air we breathe. Special precautions must be taken to mitigate the risk of oxygen deficiency, particularly in confined spaces such as in manholes and in the marine industry. We also must be aware of the risk of oxygen poisoning when working in the presence of high oxygen concentrations. For instance, oxygen leaks from high pressure oxygen cylinders during manufacturing processes can cause oxygen levels in the environment to rise.

Why is gas monitoring necessary?

  • Even small drops in oxygen levels in the air can result in symptoms of oxygen deficiency, and potentially even death. In order to maintain a safe working environment, we must check the oxygen levels in the air both before and throughout the duration of work.
  • Because confined work spaces are prone to fluctuations in oxygen levels, workers must carry a personal oxygen monitor with them at all times.
  • Inhalation of excessive amounts of oxygen in high concentration can result in oxygen poisoning.
